History of New York
The history of New York City is very colorful. It has definitely shaped the place as we know it today. Before, the state was occupied by tribes of Algonquian and Iroquois. An Italian navigator named Giovanni da Verrazano first discovered New York Bay. In 1609, Henry Hudson who is commissioned by Dutch settlers navigated its rivers. In that same year, Samuel De Champlain explored the northern area of New York for French government. Dutch first settled at fort orange which is now known as Albany.

After a year, Peter Minuit bought Manhattan Island from the native Indians. He found the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam which is now known to be New York. In 1644, it was given to the English. It was named after the Duke of York. Soon after that, the commercial growth of New York has increased due to the construction of Erie Canal. Today, this connects the city to Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania
After the declaration of independence, the people of the city met at a convention held in Kingston. This is where they gave support to form their state and government. There are a lot of battles that were set in this island but despite of that they managed to supply food and clothing to armies. New York became a state on July 26, 1788. It also adopted the first constitution. It was selected to be the country’s capital. It was also the site of George Washington’s inauguration. The city is known to be the place of dreams for many immigrants especially those coming from Europe. The statue of liberty was given by the French government as the symbol of independence.
In 1929, the great depression occurred. The United States was faced with severe economic crisis. New York has shared the negative impact of crisis which caused poverty and tragedy to its people.

Today, after the September 11 bombings, the city is rising again from the devastation of the tragedy. The economy is picking up from the pieces that were left by world trade center. Despite of that, the metropolis is the center of everything from education, entertainment and business. It is also the number one in banking, commerce, trade, manufacturing and others. This is where you can find the busiest airport in the world, the John F. Kennedy International Airport. Long Island is known for many years to be the place of manufacturing. St Lawrence Seaway has helped New York to its industrial expansion.
